Al Mayberry and Mary Delave spent three years interviewing high school students from California public schools as well as visiting the Jefferson County Open School in Lakewood, Colorado, a non-graded, self-directed community of learners. The filmmakers also traveled on school trips and observed the different parts of the school in action.
