Jefferson County Open School was established in 1970 as school of choice in the Jefferson County School District, Colorado's largest school district. The school is a pre K-12 program designed to promote an authentic community of learners. The program encourages self-directed learning with community support. across age and grade levels. Evaluations and demonstrations of competence take the place of grades and credits. Students transition through the program by completing various developmentally appropriate rites-of-passage projects. The personal, social and intellectual domains are given equal attention as the whole child is developed. Each student has a personal advisor who is accountable for an individualized educational program that fits the student's needs, learning style and passions. At the Open School, education means pursuing passions and personal growth.
